山姥 YamanbaMountain Hag

Minamoto no Raiko and Watanabe no Tsuna were travelling to Shinshu Akeyama to suppress a band of rebels.

In Akeyama, there lived a former wife of an Imperial Palace guard. After her husband’s death she had fled the capital and was living in the mountains. She cursed the world and held a grudge against people, and had reduced herself to living as a bandit with Kaidomaru.

This Yamanba (mountain hag) planned to attack Minamoto Raiko and Watanabe Tsuna, whom she had seen seeking shelter for the night. However, her attack failed and she cowed before their might, begging them to at least spare the life of Kaidomaru.

Raiko sensed within her the love of a mother, and so he forgave her, and made Kaidomaru his retainer.

Kaidomaru went on to become Sakata no Kinotoki, one of the Shitenno guardians.

Key point: A scene where the Yamanba was about to help her son “Kaidomaru”.
